WHY IT’S RAD!
This is the second W123 we’ve offered in as many weeks and we are very happy to present this one-family owned 300D sedan for auction on RAD For Sale. It’s rare to find one so well preserved and with only 143k miles on it’s robust diesel engine, it could be considered just barely broken in. Nearly 45 years after their inception, it’s still common to find these in daily use as taxis all over the world, with over a million miles on their odometer. Although it is a ‘78 model, these W123’s remained relatively unchanged throughout their production until 1985, well into the RADwood Era.
This example is finished in Maple Yellow over what appears to be Tobacco MB Tex interior. The naturally aspirated 5-cylinder diesel engine is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Photos show the vehicle wearing Alaskan license plates which match it’s registration, but it is used in Arizona at the sellers winter residence and most of its life has been spent in Los Angeles, where it is located currently.
The seller's father purchased this 300D new in 1978 and used it sparingly until his passing in 1995. Only 10k miles have been added since then. Extensive service records accompany the vehicle with fluids replaced in 2019.
Overall the car presents very well with photos showing wear to the drivers door sill insulation and small rock chips to the original paint. There is also a 2” ding on the left rear door. The engine starts and runs well without issues and the suspension is said to be compliant and ride nicely. The A/C is cold and the tires are Michelin all-seasons in good condition. Sheepskin seat covers have managed to preserve the upholstery of the front seats quite well and even the seat back storage nets are nicely intact.
The only fluid leak present is a very small leak from the transmission pan and the vehicle is currently in service for that repair which will be done before auction end. (This leak was remedied by replacing the transmission pan gasket as well as replacing the internal filter and ATF on 5/3/21).
The original Becker stereo has been replaced with a Blaupunkt Washington SQR49 cassette player and matching trunk mounted CD changer. The original Becker unit is included. The original tool roll and first-aid kit can be found in the trunk.
Overall this a one-family owned, well preserved, very usable, classic Mercedes-Benz that can be easily daily driven and/or displayed at the next RADwood show.
