1991 GMC Safari GT

How cool were vans of the ‘80s and ‘90s? Well, if you take this example into account, VERY cool. This is no ordinary GMC Safari or Chevrolet Astro van. This is a Safari GT and it shows. Just look at this package: rad ground effects body kit and roof-top spoiler, period-correct Boyd Coddington 5-star wheels and aggressive tires (white letters out, naturally), black and white two-tone paint (with gold pinstripes), 4 sport seats and a third row bench. Where many van conversions go down the utilitarian and camping focused path, this is all “street style” and we love it.

The seller purchased the van from the brother of the original owner and the gallery shows it’s in complete and preserved condition. Detailed photos from under the van show only surface rust in areas and the exhaust looks to have been replaced with a new catalytic converter, muffler and tailpipe. Exterior modifications appear to be completed in period and still present very well. The seller reports that the paint is original and there is no evidence of any body work. Finishing the look are a tinted wind deflector and c-pillar louvers.

This first generation Safari GT is equipped with the factory 4.3L V6 and power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted 4-speed automatic transmission. The hood pad shows wear but otherwise the engine bay appears OEM and unmodified. The seller reports the engine runs smoothly and the van drives well. The working odometer shows 126k miles.

The Boyd Coddington aluminum wheels appear to be in excellent condition with only the center cap logos showing any sign of wear. These wheels are wrapped in Mastercraft Avenger G/T performance tires, which have covered approximately 2500 miles.

The dash is uncracked and the grey seats and carpet are in very good condition. The factory heater and A/C both work well and an aftermarket Sony CD player has been added. Stock speakers remain.

Work completed recently includes: New water pump and thermostat, transmission service, replaced transmission output shaft seal and new driver's side door handle. Last year the alternator, starter and battery were replaced as was the power steering pump. The aforementioned tires and a front brake job with new pads and rotors was also completed in 2020.

The seller has provided a thorough 4 minute video of the van here

Overall this is a very RAD, unique, well loved and period-correct Safari GT that could easily be considered for a trophy at any RADwood show.
