WHY IT’S RAD!

The first MR2 (midship, runabout, 2-seater) with its 7,500RPM redline, 16V DOHC 4 cylinder engine, mid-rear layout, and “Lotus tuned” suspension was a mini exotic when it was first launched. It had many of the attributes of much higher dollar metal in a rock solid Toyota package with an emphasis on reliability and driver connectedness. In our book, all MR2’s are RAD, however the example here with its uber rare (believed to be 1 of 600 produced) Light Blue Metallic (8B8) paint and blue/black two-tone interior, is elevated to RADwood Royalty status.

This 1986 MR2 is a 2 owner car, which was owned by its first owner from 1985-2003. He then sold the car to the original Toyota technician who performed the initial inspection on the car, and owned it from 2003-2021. The car is said to be mechanically sound and has been well maintained since new.

Timing belt and water pump are said to have been replaced at 98,000. The engine was also "rebuilt" at the same time by the second owner, who was a Toyota Master Tech. All gears are said to engage smoothly without issue and there is no 5th gear pop out.

Per the Carfax report, the vehicle was first purchased in Oregon where it has remained until today. The underside is said to be free of leaks and “very clean.” Underside photos will be added to the listing shortly.

The body appears straight with no visible dents or damage, although the seller does state the front bumper was resprayed in the early 2000’s and the metallic flake is a close, but imperfect match. The interior appears all original, with some wear on the driver’s side seat bolster. The dash is mostly free of cracks with the exception of 2 short ones by the passenger side air vent. A Sony CD player is in place of the original deck.

Both frunk and trunk appear clean and intact with the original space saver spare secured up front. The rear trunk lining is missing clips, which hold it to the body of the car.

It is very difficult to find an original, unmolested MR2. This one with its excellent ownership history, fantastic condition, and awesome color combo has us all beyond excited at RAD For Sale HQ. Happy bidding and good luck!
