WHY IT’S RAD!
At the end of the RADwood Era there were several options of full size luxury transport and the popular choices came from Germany. The most teutonic and imposing of all could arguably be the W140 S-Class. Values of the prior generation “S” (W126) have climbed steadily as of late and now that tide is beginning to raise these W140’s, especially clean and well cared for examples such as this long wheelbase sedan.
This 1999 S320 is among the last of the W140 models to be produced before the introduction of the W220. This is a 4 owner example that spent most of its life in Florida before the current owner brought it to Kentucky about 77k miles and 8 years ago. Extensive dealer maintenance is noted in the service history and most recently it has been cared for by Mercedes-Benz of Cincinnati as well as a respected local independent shop. Factory manuals, a copy of the window sticker and a folder of service records accompanies the car.
Finished in Parchment leather, the interior shows very well with Calyptus wood trim, twelve-way adjustable power seats, factory floor mats (all-weather mats are also included for the driver and passenger), rear passenger vanity mirrors, optional electric rear sunshade, air-conditioning, and a power sunroof. An aftermarket bluetooth Alpine stereo has been added and the factory installed Bose Beta door component speakers, Bose rear deck subs, and Bose amplifier remain in use. Power, clarity and bass ability are reportedly very impressive.
The Smoke Silver paint (code 702) looks very good in photos and only small signs of corrosion are present near wheel wells. The seller had treated and painted these areas to prevent further spreading and several years later it remains the same size and is not easily noticed. The front fenders and hood were professionally repainted to a very high quality 5 years ago due to cosmetic rock chips. The front bumper was replaced with a factory part and painted by a Mercedes-Benz dealership due to a tow hitch “parking lot tap” 3 years ago.
Photos show the genuine AMG Monoblock II wheels are in good condition with some signs of wear and they are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires from 2018. The factory spare tire and wheel appear nearly new and are still present.
The front lower air dam has a small crack which is only noticeable if under the car and has been reinforced from the back side of the bumper. Clay bar and waxing has been done on a regular basis which contributes to the overall presentation of this W140.
The seller reports this S320 starts, runs and drives very well and the odometer reading of 178k miles is incredible considering the overall condition of the vehicle. The doors still shut with authority and the dual-pane windows add to the vault-like build quality.
Within the past 3 years the seller has replaced the main serpentine belt, valve cover gasket, spark plugs and wires, P/S pump, transmission cooler lines, battery, all 4 shocks with new Bilsteins, all coolant hoses, ignition coil, and the right front upper control arm. Both front brake rotors were replaced due to a slight vibration. Mobil 1 synthetic oil changes have been completed every 5,000 miles. The seller reports a slightly seeping oil pan gasket as seen in photos. Transmission fluid has been serviced at proper intervals along with brake fluid changes per Mercedes service schedule. About 6 years ago the vacuum pump for door locks and soft close doors was professionally rebuilt.
This is an interesting combination of a long wheelbase W140 fitted with the well known M104 3.2 liter 6-cylinder, finished in Smoke Silver and riding on RAD AMG Monoblock II’s- which combined, still make an impression over 20 years after it was built. With its extensive maintenance history, condition and mileage, this particular S-Class presents as both a RADwood show car or as a great daily driver.
