WHY IT’S RAD!
Is there a better “sleeper car” than a Volvo 240? By definition, the formula calls for an unassuming, practical car devoid of aerodynamic add-ons or modern appearance upgrades. A small dose of patina never hurts but anything that would garner attention is usually taboo. Once that’s settled, it’s onto the performance upgrades. Some sleepers may just tweak what's already there- engine mods, weight reduction, sport suspension. But others go further and what we have here is an example of that: a sedate looking Volvo 242 (240 2-door) with a 600+ horsepower turbocharged LS V8. Yeah, that’ll do.
This Volvo was a single owner California car, before being shipped to Michigan and undergoing extensive modifications. It’s finished in Cherokee Red, resprayed 10 years ago, with some welcome patina and is a rare flat hood, slicktop example. Later 240 bumpers have been fitted but original lights, glass (including pop-out rear windows) and trim are still present.
Performance modifications are quite extensive and start with a 6.0 liter LQ4 iron block LS V8 with upgraded cam, valve springs, fuel system, cooling system (with electric water pump), intake, oil pan, exhaust and much more. A VS racing turbo has been added with a 44mm wastegate, 3” core intercooler and downpipe (with muffler) subtly exiting at the front fender. The seller reports it’s been reliably street tuned to 10psi on E85 (retains the flex fuel sensor) and produces 600 wheel-horsepower in its current state. A 4L80-E 4-speed automatic transmission with an upgraded torque converter, HD2 shift kit and B&M shifter is connected to a custom 1000hp-rated drive shaft and a Ford 8.8 rear end.
Suspension has been replaced with a custom Air Lift set-up with manual valves, 3-gallon air tank and single compressor along with upgraded IPD torque arms and panhard bar. Brakes have also been upgraded to handle the additional power with MK3 Toyota Supra components and manual Wilwood master cylinder with proportioning valve. Redrilled BBS RC090 wheels with new bolts and custom center cap emblems are fitted. Fully adjustable-assist electric power steering has been installed as well.
Interior mods are tasteful and feature BMW E30 seats, with the original Volvo steering wheel and Holley Terminator X-Max engine management with a 7” digital display installed with 3D printed surround. The dash has been flocked, the firewall has been sealed and sound deadening added. The period correct Sony cassette player is disconnected but a 400 watt bluetooth amplifier is installed and is connected to 4 Kenwood speakers with custom “Volvo” speaker grilles. Custom HVAC control panel and gauges are also present. Updated Vintage Air A/C has been installed and blows cold.
Recently all fluids were replaced and a brake service (with new pads, rotors and fluid) was completed, which was done 200 miles ago when the car was pulled out of winter storage. Extensive records from the original owner are included as are complete details of the build.
This Volvo has been fully transformed but still appears to be just a slightly modified, yet RAD 242. That is, until that V8 rumbles, the turbo spools and this sleeper wakes up.
