WHY IT’S RAD!
This is Prelude genesis, the first and scarcest of five fabulous generations. Like all Preludes, first-gen cars serve up a sophisticated and appealing blend of fun handling, GT refinement, and discreet but stylish bodywork. Add in Honda quality and economy, mix in a bit of late Soichiro Era quirkiness like a forward tilting hood and OEM analog/digital clock, and don't forget this example's rare factory color, hard-to-find optional wheels and desirable 5-speed manual transmission.
This 1981 Honda Prelude wears new paint in its original shade of Windsor Blue, and is said to be a lifelong Southern California car. The five-digit odometer records just under 19,000 miles, though it appears to have rolled over at least twice, per the CARFAX. Optional factory 13" five spoke wheels look right at home, and badging and brightwork appear to be complete.
The car is said to be mechanically fit, with recent work including a carburetor service and adjustment, as well as an oil and filter change. The seller says that controls are light and slick, and that the car is a joy to drive. Power comes from a 1.8 liter SOHC CVCC-II four-cylinder, driving the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox that's much preferable over the 2- and 3-speed automatics fitted to many early Preludes.
The airy interior offers lots of light and good visibility, even with the standard power moonroof closed, and everything but factory A/C is reported to be in good working condition. Seat centers have been replaced with OEM style fabric, and outer vinyl portions remain original. Though lacking the funky combination tachometer/speedometer of pre-facelift cars, there's still plenty of period charm in this cabin, including the original tapedeck and analog/digital clock.
Though actually the second-most successful generation behind their immediate successors, first-gen Preludes have been rare for more than a decade, and good examples are now among the most difficult classic Hondas to find.
