1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Indy 500 Pace Car Edition

Bid to: $1750
Total Bids: 3

The Indianapolis 500 of 1982 is considered an epic race by those who follow the sport. All three Whittington brothers started the race together- which was a first. Rick Mears won the pole and led the most laps. Mario Andretti tangled with AJ Foyt and the race was ultimately won by Gordon Johncock. In the aftermath of those on-track skirmishes, the field of remaining drivers were led by a car very similar to what is offered for sale here: a 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Indy 500 Pace Car.

While this wasn’t the actual vehicle used during the race, it’s appearance is nearly identical and the original owner claimed to have actually driven it on the track during the weekend of the 66th running of the Indy 500. The commemorative “paper” license plate and ticket stub for the ‘82 race accompanies the car and is shown in the photo gallery.

This is a highly optioned Z28 that the seller claims is one of only 20 identified production J65 4-wheel disc brake equipped Pace Cars. In addition to the J65 option, it has a console clock and a default AM/FM radio with clock, t-tops, and rear wiper. All Pace Car editions were optioned with two tone silver/blue paint and interior, unique graphics and stripes, 15” wheels and upgraded adjustable seats.

Overall this Camaro is a preserved and unmodified example that runs well and has been recently serviced.

Cosmetic defects include some paint blemishes, blue stripe graphics delaminating near the front air dam and some rust is present on the left rear fender as seen in photos. The interior appears complete and original with small splits on the driver's seat and headliner. Scuffs are visible in rear seat trim and aftermarket floor mats are present. The T-top storage bag in the trunk is in good condition and factory manuals accompany the vehicle. New OEM wheel center caps are included.

The seller reports the Cross-Fire Injection 5.0 liter V8 starts and runs well. Recently a new AC Delco battery has been installed and extensive service in 2019 included: new fuel tank, fuel pump, filter and sending unit. Also in 2019: new OEM distributor, spark plugs and wires, alternator, temp sensor, thermostat and more. The A/C is functional, however, the heater core has been bypassed.

This rare J65 optioned Camaro Z28 Indy 500 Pace Car has been enthusiast owned and shows just 72k miles from new.
