WHY IT’S RAD!

Although first sold in 1974, the MK1 Golf’s Giugiaro penned lines have become strongly associated with the 1980’s. In the US, this may be attributed to the GTI’s success as the first hot hatch which was introduced as a 1983 model. There was also the extensive aftermarket support from now iconic tuners like Callaway, Neuspeed, and Zender. Combine this with an attainable price point, simplistic, easy to modify design and you have yourself a true icon that resonates strongly with many who were around in the RADwood Era.

The example presented here is a German built, 1979 Rabbit Diesel. The vehicle is said to be a California car since new and was enjoyed there by the current owner for 3 years before a recent move relocated the car to Arkansas. The seller states the previous owner installed a turbo diesel engine from a MK2 Jetta in the late ‘80s. Power is sent through a 5 speed manual transaxle and Jetta clutch. The seller reports he regularly gets 40-50 MPG with this setup.

This car sports a very RADwood Era correct aftermarket paint job, Zender bodykit, and a Britax ragtop. “Porsche” fog lights and a rare set of MOMO Quasar wheels round out the exterior.

The interior appears to be free of tears, however there is a small crack in dashboard and the glove box was cut into at some point for a stereo. The currently installed Kenwood “pull out” KRC-340 tape deck is said to “work great.” The A/C does not blow cold, however the heater is said to work well.

The engine bay shows a Neuspeed strut brace and the car is lowered, however the owner does not know what springs were used.

The blue California license plates, original keys, manuals, and assorted records are included with the car.

Buy this awesome time capsule and break necks at a future RADwood!
